[ARVD-FORUM] Prevalence of ARVC/D. Answer to Dr. Zareba and Dr Fontaine. Dr. Nava and Dr. Bauce

We agree with Dr. Fontaine that ARVC/D is not a rare disease.

This wrong but diffuse opinion is due to the fact that the disease is
frequently misdiagnosed.

The recent discovery of new genes linked to ARVC/D reveals that up to now we
are able to recognise quite easily severe forms of the disease, that are
limited in number. On the contrary, we do not have diagnostic criteria able
to detect mild forms of ARVC/D that constitute the majority of cases.

The development of genetic studies will help in the diagnosis of these
forms, thus in the next future we will be able to evaluate the real
prevalence of this disease.

Estamos de acuerdo con el Dr. Fontaine en que la M/DAVD no es una enfermedad
rara.

Esta opinion erronea pero difundida se debe al hecho de que la enfermedad
con frecuencia es diagnosticada en forma equivocada.

El descubrimiento reciente de nuevos genes vinculados con la M/DAVD revela
que hasta ahora eramos capaces de reconocer bastante facilmente las formas
graves de la enfermedad, que son una cantidad limitada. Por el contrario, no
tenemos criterios diagnosticos capaces de detectar las formas leves de
M/DAVD que constituyen la mayoria de los casos.

El desarrollo de estudios geneticos ayudara en el diagnostico de estas
formas; de este modo en el futuro cercano seremos capaces de evaluar la
prevalencia real de esta enfermedad.
