Dr. Brembilla-Perrot made a very relevant comment, and her fear is
well grounded. Although we are very optimistic with the short-term
results of AF ablation, this therapeutic choice is not recommended
yet by any of the guidelines of clinical practice, as a first-line
choice. For AF ablation to become a first-line choice, multicenter
clinical studies are required, to support such recommendation.
Currently the RAAFT study (First Line Radiofrequency Ablation versus
Antiarrhythmic Drugs for Atrial Fibrillation Treatment: A multicentre
Randomized Trial) is assessing the hypothesis that AF ablation as a
first-line choice is superior to conventional pharmacological
therapy. This study, which will include 400 patients enrolled in more
than 40 centers in Canada, Europe, United States and Australia, will
give us the necessary information to support the recommendation of AF
ablation as first-line therapeutic choice. This study is coordinated
by the Population Research Institute of the University of McMaster in
Canada, and they are actively enrolling patients at the moment.
